Atletico Madrid – Bayern Munich | 01/12/2020

Atletico Madrid will be looking to gain revenge on Bayern Munich when the two teams lock horns at the Wanda Metropolitano in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Bayern recorded a 4-0 victory when the pair locked horns in Munich, and the reigning champions have already booked their spot in the round of 16 with two games to spare. Atletico are second in Group A, meanwhile, but still have work to do if they are to progress to the knockout stage of the competition.

Atletico’s Champions League form this season has been patchy at best, winning just one of their four matches, but a return of five points has left them in second spot in the table. Diego Simeone’s side recovered from the 4-0 defeat in Munich on October 21 by recording a 3-2 success over Red Bull Salzburg one week later.

Leading the pack in the race for second after matchday four, Atlético Madrid are unbeaten in 12 UEFA Champions League (UCL) home games (W9, D3). Six of those nine wins came against opposition from a top-five European domestic league, ending 1-0 or 2-0 (average margin: 1.67 goals).

Half of the Rojiblancos’ ten goals scored across those six wins against such ‘elite’ opposition came between the 76th-90th+ minutes of play. Against all opponents, meanwhile, three of Atlético’s last five UCL home victories have seen their deciding goal come in that same late period.

Bayern’s record-breaking run of successive UCL victories was extended to 15 by a 3-1 ‘cruise’ vs Salzburg on matchday four. In turn, they remain set to become the first team to attain perfect UCL group stage returns in successive years, having beaten the -2 handicap in six of their last nine outings in this competition.

Unlike the reverse meeting, this could be close, as five of Bayern’s last seven competitive away games vs Spanish teams (W2, D1, L4 – 90 mins) have yielded a single-goal margin. Bayern’s ten-year group stage away record vs pot 2 teams in a UCL group is also in negative territory: W4, D1, L5, with ‘Die Roten’ conceding an average of 2.40 goals across the defeats.
