Barcelona – Napoli | 08/08/2020

Barcelona will welcome Napoli to Camp Nou on Saturday night for the second leg of their last-16 clash in the Champions League. The tie is delicately poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg back in February, and the winner will advance to Lisbon for a knockout tournament to determine the winner of this season’s European Cup.

Barcelona take a 1-1 draw into this UEFA Champions League (UCL) second leg at Camp Nou, and have now seen five of their last six UCL games feature both teams score and the opener netted by the 30th minute. The hosts scored the opener three times during that period, but are winless in the last three competitive matches in which they conceded first (D1, L2).

The hosts have scored just one goal in four of their last six home games (W4, D1, L1), and will be concerned by the fact that they’ve failed to lead at HT in their last four matches here (HT: D3, L1). However, they are unbeaten in their last 35 UCL home games (W31, D4), winning despite a -1 handicap in 80.65% of their victories during that time.

Napoli finished the Serie A (SA) season in a disappointing seventh position, but did lose just two of their last nine SA fixtures (W5, D2, L2), despite both teams scoring in seven. Scoring first could be crucial though, as ten of Napoli’s last 11 competitive games that didn’t end in a draw (regulation time only), saw the winner net first.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they won just one of their final five SA away fixtures (W1, D1, L3) – witnessing three penalties and two goals disallowed via VAR during that time (either way) – and have lost their last three European trips to Spain.

Barca are actually unbeaten in their last 35 Champions League matches on home soil, while they have not lost in any of their last 15 home fixtures against Italian opposition, picking up 12 victories in the process.

Five-time European champions, the team’s last success in this competition came back in 2015, and they were incredibly eliminated by Liverpool in the semi-finals of last season’s tournament despite running out 3-0 winners in the first leg of their last-four tie with the Merseyside giants.
