Bayern Munich – Paris Saint Germain | 07/04/2021

Reigning champions Bayern Munich prepare to take on old foes and last season’s beaten finalists Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. Nearly eight months have passed since Kingsley Coman propelled Bayern to European glory with a 1-0 win over PSG in the 2019-20 final, and the two giants head into this game following contrasting fortunes in their domestic ventures. Bayern’s quest for a ninth Bundesliga title gathered steam with a 1-0 win over RB Leipzig, but PSG’s trophy hopes took yet another significant hit with defeat to Lille by the same scoreline.

A repeat of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League (UCL) final descends on the Allianz Arena as six-time European champions Bayern Munich attempt to heap more misery on a PSG side desperate to progress as they continue hunting a first-ever UCL trophy. However, Bayern are favourites in this quarter final for a reason, and a 2-1 win in their last UCL game not only gave the 30-time German champions their 150th UCL victory, but also equaled their club record run of 19 games unbeaten in this tournament (W18, D1).

This is also a Bayern side that’s netted 2+ goals in 12 straight competitive games here (W10, D2), and 2+ before HT in three of the previous four. Therefore expect a home side worthy of their favourites status, especially as they’ve won nine of their last ten fixtures vs French opposition at all venues – albeit the exception was a 3-0 defeat vs PSG back in 2017!

PSG’s record of progressing in only two of six previous UCL quarter-final ties won’t help their confidence, neither will losing Ligue 1’s top spot to title-rivals Lille last time out – a game that gave PSG a third winless match from their last five (W2, D1, L2), and that’s despite scoring the opener in four.

However the nine-time French champions hammered Barcelona 4-1 in their last UCL road trip, a game that forms part of a seven-match winning run on the road, although it was also PSG’s third straight UCL away outing in which they conceded before HT.
