Brighton – Southampton | 07/12/2020

Southampton make the short trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday evening looking to hit back from their dramatic defeat to Manchester United last weekend. Meanwhile, Brighton’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool has kept the Seagulls four points above the Premier League relegation zone.

Brighton & Hove Albion have lost just one of their last six in the Premier League (PL) (W1, D4, L1), and most recently saved a point against Liverpool with an injury time penalty. Indeed, they’ve scored five PL goals after the 80th minute so far – in addition to being shown seven yellow and three red cards in the same timeframe!

Though tough to beat in recent weeks, Brighton are nonetheless one of just two teams still winless at home ahead of this round (D3, L2) – but they are at least trending right, going unbeaten in three. Since 2017, however, they’ve not been able to beat Southampton here in a competitive match (D1, L3), losing three in a row without once finding the net.

Southampton visit after letting a 2-0 lead slip and losing 3-2 against Manchester United in the last round, marking their first defeat in eight league matches (W5, D2, L1). Impressively, they scored 2.13 goals on average across those eight matches, while at the other end, they kept a clean sheet in four.

Away from home, Southampton are unbeaten in four (W2, D2) in matches that have averaged 4.0 total goals. In those, they conceded 1.5 goals on average per second half, but just 0.5 per first half. Contrary to Brighton’s ‘card magnetism’, the saintly ‘Saints’ have been fairly clean with just 1.3 yellow cards dealt to them on average per game.
