Colombia – Uruguay | 13/11/2020

Colombia and Uruguay will both be looking to pick up their second win of CONMEBOL FIFA World Cup qualification when the two South American giants lock horns at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Melendez on Friday. The hosts have beaten Venezuela and drawn with Chile already, whereas Uruguay overcame Chile before losing to Ecuador last month.

Colombia (FIFA Rank: #10) have been solid under experienced international coach Carlos Queiroz, going unbeaten in 13 of his 16 games in charge (W9, D4). Notably, each of Colombia’s victories under Queiroz came ‘to nil’, and subsequently, just two of their 11 clashes with CONMEBOL opposition saw both teams score (W6, D5 in 90 minutes).

Whilst the hosts possess just a 20% win-rate vs top-ten CONMEBOL nations since the 2014 World Cup (W3, D5, L7), these games have still often been tight affairs with nine producing under 2.5 goals and just five seeing both teams score. However Colombia’s home record across the same matches stands at a disappointing D3, L1.

Uruguay (#7) are blighted by a long absentee list due to Covid-19 and injuries, with big names like Federico Valverde and Maxi Gómes missing out. That might help extend their leaky run of no clean sheets in seven of their last eight outings (W4, D3, L1), though despite the back-and-forth nature, Uruguay only won during this sequence when scoring first.

Topically, Uruguay have a poor record in all games vs other top-ten ranked CONMEBOL nations since the 2014 World Cup (W1, D4, L6), with their away record across the same games – including neutral venues – standing at D3, L4. Three of those four away defeats came by a 1-0 scoreline, whilst all draws ended 2-2.
