Crystal Palace – Newcastle | 27/11/2020

Newcastle United will be looking for a rare victory away to Crystal Palace when they make the trip to Selhurst Park for Friday’s Premier League clash. The Magpies are winless in their last five top-flight visits to the ground and could do with ending that run on the back of successive 2-0 league defeats. Palace are two points better off than their opponents, despite going down 1-0 to strugglers Burnley in their first game back after the international break.

It’s been mostly all or nothing for Crystal Palace this season following their 1-0 loss to Burnley last time out, with all but one of their nine Premier League (PL) games finding a winner (W4, D1, L4). Furthermore, it’s been eight league matches since they last kept a clean sheet, with good starts often offset by ending the game poorly. Indeed, four (50%) of their eight first-half goals came in the opening 15 minutes but five (71.43%) out of seven second-half goals they conceded came after the 75th.

Encouragingly, they’ve scored in each of their four home PL games this term (W2, D1, L1) and netted first in three of those (W2, D1). Five (71.43%) out of their seven goals therein came before the 30th minute and notably, the ‘Eagles’ were unbeaten when opening the scoring at home last season (W5, D1).

Newcastle United’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea (November 21) was the first time they recorded the same result in successive PL games this term (W3, D2, L4). Like their opponents, it’s been eight league games since they kept a clean sheet and seven (77.78%) of the nine second-half goals they’ve conceded came after the 75th minute.

The ‘Magpies’ are winless in three PL away games (D2, L1) after an opening-day win at West Ham, with all four such matches this term producing exactly two goals. Yet to score before HT away from home, they’ve received an average of 2.25 yellow cards per PL away game – fewer than only Leicester City (2.4).
