Dortmund – Bayern Munich | 17/08/2021

Having kicked off their 2021-22 Bundesliga seasons in contrasting fashions, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich prepare for a Klassiker battle in Tuesday evening’s DFL-Supercup battle. Julian Nagelsmann’s men kicked off their title defence with a 1-1 draw against Borussia Monchengladbach, while Dortmund ran out convincing 5-2 winners against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Boasting a combined total of 39 Bundesliga titles and 25 DFB Pokals, these great rivals will compete in the Supercup (1987-1996, 2010-present) for a fifth time in six years. Though pre-match outsiders here, Borussia Dortmund ran out 2-0 Supercup winners over the champions (after a goalless first) only two years ago and started the new season in fine form at the weekend with a thumping 5-2 win.

As a result of that surprise win two years back, ‘Der BVB’ account for three of the four Supercups won by DFB Pokal winners / Bundesliga runners up between 2013 and 2020. Those three are also the competition’s only handicap-beating regular-time wins for a non-champion in history.

Battling out a hard-fought draw in the Bundesliga opener last Friday, Bayern Munich are the Super Cup ‘kings’ with eight titles. Winners of four of the last five editions, including last year, the trio of regular time wins in that sequence saw them average 3.33 goals per game and score exactly twice in one half.

Overall, this will be Bayern Munich’s ninth-ever Supercup H2H vs Dortmund. Three of the preceding four have stood level at the break, while each of the last four to see a HT leader saw the team in question go on to win. In fact, you would have to go back to 1989 – the very first Supercup H2H – to find the last time any HT leader in a Supercup final failed to lift the trophy.
