England – Iceland | 18/11/2020

England will attempt to round off their Nations League campaign with victory when they welcome Iceland to Wembley for the final matchday in League A Group 2 on Wednesday. The hosts cannot qualify for the finals and Iceland’s relegation is already confirmed, so there is only pride on the line for both teams in midweek.

England’s only task now is to avoid recording the nation’s first pair of successive competitive home defeats in over 20 years. If they do find themselves trailing, England will take confidence from the fact that each of their last five competitive home wins to see both teams score have seen them concede first (HT: W1, D4).

The hosts are now incapable of proceeding to the UEFA Nations League (UNL) finals, but they have lost just two of their last nine at home against teams currently in UNL League A (W4, D3, L2). England averaged 1.0 goals beyond the hour mark across those four victories, while three of them produced a goalless first half.

Long since doomed to relegation in last place, Iceland have been utterly dismal from the start of this UNL campaign (L5 – GF 3, GA 13). By extension, they stand on nine straight defeats from as many all-time UNL matches, losing at HT/FT on six occasions across those losses.

Going back to October 2015, Iceland’s competitive away record against teams currently in UNL League A reads: D1, L7. Six of the losses saw Iceland concede inside the opening 15 minutes, and all but the most recent defeat (vs Denmark) came by a 2+ goal margin. Four (57.14%) of those seven losses saw the second half produce over 2.5 total goals.
