EXPERTS Eswatini Interesting Markets for Casino Business 4 years ago Adeleye Awakan Post Views: 1,180 Eswatini, formerly called Swaziland officially the kingdom of Eswatini, is a sovereign state in Southern Africa. Mozambique neighbors it to its east, and by South Africa to the north, west, and south, the country and its people take their names from Mswati 11, the 19-century king under whose rule Swazi territory was expanded and unified. Gambling is legal and regulated in Swaziland by the two pieces of legislation of the Casino Act and the Lottery Act of 1963. Several land-based casinos are operating in the country, and the Swazi government reported to issue online gambling licenses as well. Gambling in Swaziland falls under the Ministry of Tourism, Environmental Affairs Communication. It regulated by the Casino Act of 1963, the Lotteries Act of 1963, and the Bookmakers and Taxation Act of 1970. As stated, the land-based casinos are legal and licensed since the early 1960s.The purpose of the casino gambling legislation is to make the country an appealing tourist destination. The service industry in Eswatini is an essential sector of the country’s economy alone. It accounts for 2.8% of total GDP in Swaziland at the same time as a sub-sector of retail casino gambling markets, hotels, and restaurants in the whole economy. It represents an annual average of 11 percent in total economic activity in the country, and this booming industry contributes substantial revenue to the country’s GDP growth of 3.2%. While the data collected from the World Bank, a total of 947,000 international tourists visited the country in 2016. Also, the tourism industry in Swaziland has a vast potential still to exploit under the national tourism policy of the current Eswatini’s tourism sector, the CEO Linda Nxumalo, said. The country is confident that it will exceed the goal of more than two million tourist arrivals by 2023. Compared to the 2016 data collected by World Bank in 2016, further said, part of the programs to achieve this goal is through strategic partnerships with other Southern African tourism organizations. The recently completed strategic roadmap and tourism are one of the critical pillars of the country’s economic growth. As stated earlier, the legislation of casino gambling in the country came into existence in the 60s due to the booming tourism sector. In regards to this, the success, of the industry could be attributed to the neighboring countries that are going through a civil war in the 60s, part of which cemented the country as one the place to visit in Africa. At the same time, it’s known for its vibrant culture, traditions and appealing tourist destination for visitors. However, online gambling is legal in Eswatini. At the same time, there are several land-based casinos, one of them being Pigg’s Peak, which was granted license over 20 years ago to offer both retail and online products. Perhaps, there are many Southern Africa casino sites that target players in the country of a population of over one million people. Still, the growth of casino gambling in the country leads to addiction among people, while the wayward habits of ladies are wearing a miniskirt and revealing clothes in the casino gambling house. The Swazi government had to impose a ban as well as to all government workers who found gambling would be relieved of his job. Though the government did not officially state or indicate that players from Swazi cannot participate in offshore online casino platforms or face any penalties in the country, there is no reported internet censoring system in place in Eswatini as well. Given the government’s overall liberal stance on gambling and online gambling, it is safe to say Swazi players not prosecuted for playing on an offshore online site.
