EXPERTS KENYA Gamblers Rejoice As Court Scraps Nairobi Law 2 months ago Samuel Post Views: 125 The Nairobi City County Betting, Lotteries, and Gaming Act 2021 has been quashed by the high court. In a decision issued by Justice Antony Mrima deemed the legislation to be illegal, null and void, saying it lacks legal significance. “A Declaration is hereby issued that the Nairobi City County Betting, Lotteries, and Gaming Act, 2021 is in violation of Articles 10, 174(c), 196, and 201(a) of the County Governments Act, as well as Section 87 of the County Governments Act, for lack of reasonable public participation and stakeholder consultations,” – the judgment states. The Association of Gambling Operators of Kenya filed a lawsuit in 2021, when the statute went into effect, to contest the county’s decision to monitor them. The court decided that there was no genuine public participation in the drafting of the challenged Act.
