Ghana’s Finance Minister moves to scrap betting tax in 2025 budget

Ghana’s Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, is taking steps to abolish the betting tax in the 2025 budget reading – a decision that will be widely welcomed by bettors, particularly sports fans engaged in sports betting.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the finance minister is in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to remove what he describes as nuisance taxes, including the betting tax, the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), and the COVID-19 levy.

The discussions aim to ensure that scrapping these taxes does not negatively impact Ghana’s financial aid program with the IMF.

This move aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s campaign promise to abolish the betting tax if elected in the 2024 general elections, a pledge that was well received by sports bettors.

During his ministerial vetting, Dr. Forson reaffirmed his commitment to eliminating the betting tax, emphasizing that it would not affect the economy.

The tax is expected to be officially scrapped in March 2025, allowing bettors to retain their full earnings without deductions.
