Greece – Spain | 11/11/2021 World cup Qualifiers.

Spain will endeavour to keep the pressure on Sweden when they travel to face Greece in World Cup 2022 Qualifying Group B on Thursday night. Luis Enrique’s side most recently saw off Kosovo 2-0 to cement their second-placed position, while the hosts went down 2-0 to Sweden to leave their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

Group B of UEFA’s 2022 World Cup Qualification (WCQ) campaign could provide a nail-biting finish in the last two rounds, with a number of permutations possible. Greece are sitting in third place with nine points and in the knowledge they can’t top the group, but their hopes of snatching second place all come down to pulling off an upset over opponents Spain here, with failure to do so resulting in missing a second successive World Cup finals.

Hence, the under pressure Greeks will need to come out of their shell, as their characteristic defensive stubbornness will have to give way for bravery in attack. They’ll have to find the right balance though, as their three losses in their last 21 internationals have come in the only instances where they’ve conceded more than once in the match during that time (W11, D7).

Recent UEFA Nations League losing finalists Spain have different pressures, as only a win can guarantee they remain in contention to win the group. Such a victory would set up a final day winner-takes-all affair with the Swedes, with ‘La Roja’ last failing to top their WCQ group in preparation for the 2006 showpiece.

There is plenty to play for at the Olympic Stadium of Athens therefore, with Spain manager Luis Enrique knowing his team have two attempts to at least finish second in the group. He’ll be looking for the sort of performance his team put in to end Italy’s recent historic 37-game unbeaten run, and not the lackluster effort seen when these two countries shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw back in March.
