Is gambling an economic activity in Kenya?

Most Kenyans see sports betting as a legitimate and transparent activity. To make ends meet they have moved to gambling. In an economy that doesn’t offer a stable employment or income, this has become a full time job for most of the Kenyans.

The lucrative job for most kenyans has been facing a lot of challenges since last year. The gamblers were hit by shocking news when the government introduced taxation to the betting sites. Taxes levied were aimed at curbing down an increasing number of gamblers among the citizens.

Most young Kenyan gamblers have been poor and stressed up and gambling has not led them to some of the vices the government believes gambling has. Suicide, alcoholism and poverty are some of them. Kenyans betting life is unpredictable but most believe that if they don’t bet, they might go hungry for nights.

What’s so funny is the government’s perspective about upcoming millionaires who earned it through gambling. It sees it as a quick-to-riches-scheme which a great percentage of gamblers do not.

Impossed taxation led to the closure of several betting sites, which resulted in a lot of jobless people. This also led to withdrawal of betting company’s sponsorship to kenyan football clubs. This has ruined the football in the kenyan leagues.
