Kenya has launched a drive against illegal gambling in the country, following which the authorities are conducting raids across the country.

The authorities in the central region of Kenya across Kiambu county have seized and destroyed 110 illegal gambling machines and also destroyed illegal toxic substances worth $8 million.

The Thursday afternoon raids which saw the destruction of illegal gambling machines were headed by Regional commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga. The authorities have said that following the raids they have destroyed 110 illegal gambling machines, a hundred plus rolls of bhang, 110 litres Chang’aa, 45 litres Muratina, 300 litres of Kangara, 2 cartons of second-generation liquor, 40 litres of Molasses and a boiler cooler.

The police also said that they have arrested several suspects; however, they did not reveal the exact number of people arrested. The police said that they are looking out for some who managed to escape and have gone into hiding.

The raids and seizure of the gambling machines was done as a part of the execution of the directive issued by the country’s Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.

The police commissioner has said that the illegal gambling machines were immoral and he compared gambling addiction to be more precarious than the spread of HIV/AIDs explaining that it hampers the economic lives of people and also the community.

The Commissioner assured that they are committed to their fight against gambling and also expressed concerns over children and teenagers being lured by the charm of gambling. He said that more raids will follow and that several agencies are collaborating together to achieve complete ousting of gambling syndicates from the region.
