Liverpool welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to Anfield on Wednesday looking to make it three Premier League wins in a row for the first time since September. The champions climbed back up to third in the table with a 3-1 victory at West Ham United on Sunday, shortly before Brighton beat Tottenham Hotspur to ease their relegation concerns.

Consecutive 3-1 away wins has made Liverpool look like title contenders again, and banished their prior four-game scoreless Premier League (PL) streak to history. However within that streak was the Reds’ last home game – a 1-0 loss to Burnley that ended a 68-game unbeaten top-flight run at Anfield. Furthermore, the contrast compared to last season remains stark, with their 40 points after 21 games a massive 21 fewer at this stage than 2019/20.

The defending champions must end their three-game winless PL streak at home (D2, L1) and avoid going four without a win at Anfield for the first time since October 2012. Brighton should be good opponents to end that run considering Liverpool’s last four competitive home H2Hs saw them win at both HT/FT.

That said, Brighton are enjoying some fine form with a 1-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend giving them a fourth consecutive unbeaten match (W3, D1), and a third straight PL clean sheet for just the second time in their history. Those results have given them a comfortable cushion above the drop zone as they face a side they haven’t kept a shutout against since 1983/84.

The odds are against them, but five of Brighton’s last six PL wins have come on the road, although all four of their PL away defeats this season came at HT/FT and against sides placed in the top eight ahead of this round.
