Liverpool – Chelsea | 04/03/2021

A potentially pivotal match in the Premier League top-four race takes place at Anfield on Thursday when champions Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Merseyside. The hosts sit one place and one point behind their visitors, and victory for either team would be enough to lift them into the Champions League spots with fourth-placed West Ham United not in action in midweek.

Still hopeful of a third successive podium finish, Liverpool ended their four-game losing streak in Premier League (PL) action on Sunday, with a first clean-sheet league victory since Dec 19th. The straightforward win over doomed Sheffield United saw the ‘Reds’ land 80% of the game’s ten total shots on-target, and take 60% possession, but curiously lose the corner count 4-3.

Damningly, Liverpool have still attained only two PL clean-sheet home wins from a possible 13. The ‘Reds’ have seen 66.67% (six) of their last nine PL home ‘goals against’ arrive beyond the hour mark, with three such goals coming in precisely the 83rd minute – twice via a penalty!

Back on for a top-four spot after a tactical shift, Chelsea have won the possession metric in every PL game under Thomas Tuchel (W4, D3). In doing so by an average margin of 34.57%, the ‘Blues’ have a clear key to continuing their ability to shut out the opposition, as they have done in all but two of their league games under Tuchel’s management.

Additionally, Chelsea entered the new week as one of only two teams (alongside Everton) with a 100% record from 5+ PL away games led at HT. That could be a huge weapon here, as the ‘Blues’ look to avoid completing a run of consecutive losing H2H ‘league doubles’ for the first time since May 2012. They also seek their first league win at Anfield since November 2014.
