Liverpool – Leicester | 22/11/2020

Sunday plays host to a mouth-watering showdown between Premier League champions and Premier League leaders as third-placed Liverpool welcome top-of-the-table Leicester City to Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s side have top spot and history in their sights but must first overcome a crippling injury crisis against a Leicester side that has set the early pace this season under former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

The international break piled on the injury misery for Liverpool, but they still sport a 100% record at home in the Premier League (PL) this season (W4). It’s been close though, as the ‘Reds’ recently became only the second team in PL history to concede the first goal but win in three consecutive home matches.

Overall, Liverpool are unbeaten in seven straight competitive matches (W5, D2), and have won five of the last six PL H2Hs against Leicester. Currently almost without a fit centre-back, Liverpool have conceded more PL goals after eight matches (2.0 per match on average) than Chelsea did in their entire 2004/05 title winning campaign.

Six PL wins from the first eight games (L2) means Leicester have bettered the start from their title winning 2015/16 campaign. Their seventh successful spot kick from eight attempts this season gave them victory in their last PL game and marked the earliest in a PL campaign that any team have recorded eight penalties. With six straight competitive wins in a row, the ‘Foxes’ travel with confidence and recently won their opening four league away matches for the first time in their 116-year long club history.

Going the distance, Leicester have scored 76.92% of their 13 away PL goals this season after the break, and across those they average 1.5 goals per match scored from the 75th minute onwards. Scoring precisely one goal in each of their last four visits to Anfield, three of those were struck before the break.
