FC Midtjylland’s first ever away game in the Champions League proper could hardly come at a more glamorous venue as they visit Anfield to take on six-time winners of the competition Liverpool on Tuesday night. The two sides endured contrasting fortunes on matchday one, with Liverpool edging to a 1-0 triumph away to Ajax and Midtjylland losing 4-0 at home to Atalanta BC.

Liverpool overcame key defensive absences in UEFA team of the year keeper Allison and defender Virgil van Dijk and beat Ajax 1-0 in the first UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage round. Expected to up the goal output against CL debutants Midtjylland, Liverpool’s group stage matches last season averaged 3.5 goals.

Apparently primed to win by a landslide, the ‘Reds’ have overcome a -2.5 handicap in ten of 37 UCL matches under Jürgen Klopp, and scored 4+ goals in ten as well – that includes qualifiers and knockout stage fixtures. Four of their last six home wins in all competitions have come via a margin of at least two goals, and three of the four wins saw them lead at HT/FT.

In their first group stage match, Midtjylland got a taste of the UCL-level brutality that awaits unsuspecting newcomers to this phase, suffering a thumping 4-0 defeat against Atalanta. Scant hope for the visitors lies in the fact that seven of Liverpool’s ten competitive matches this season have featured both teams scoring.

This season, they’ve lost just two of ten competitive matches (W6, D2, L2) – both times with a margin of at least two goals and without scoring themselves. Additionally, they’ve conceded an average of 2.0 goals per match across their last five competitive matches, and 2+ goals in three of their four away matches so far.
