Two continental giants clash at Old Trafford on Thursday, as Manchester United meet AC Milan in the Europa League, with both sides seeking silverware in Europe as they trail in the wake of local rivals domestically. More accustomed to going head-to-head at the elite level, this heavyweight last-16 tie pits together a pair of once-dominant clubs, now edging closer to former glories under unfashionable but effective management.

Manchester United triumphed 2-0 in the Manchester derby at the weekend as they netted a goal in either half and registered a fifth clean sheet from their last six competitive games (W3, D3). That result means United are unbeaten in the previous 103 Premier League (PL) fixtures in which they took a lead into HT (W91, D12), which is useful form considering they’ve scored before HT in the last two H2Hs vs AC Milan (W2).

Whilst both of those were back in 2010, United could very well achieve victory again in this clash between two former European champions as the ‘Red Devils’ are unbeaten in 15 consecutive UEFA Europa League (UEL) home matches (W12, D3), and have scored during both halves in their last three PL fixtures – as well as the last two H2Hs – held at Old Trafford.

Although Milan will start as outsiders, they have happy memories of Old Trafford after beating Juventus here in 2003 to be crowned champions of Europe. However they scraped past Red Star Belgrade on away goals in the last knockout phase (3-3), and have now won just one of their previous 12 European knockout away games (W1, D4, L7).

Their recent ten-game away form in all competitions has been rather predictable too, with Milan scoring two goals on eight occasions (W6, D2), and netting either side of HT in the last six of those. However their away record vs English opposition in UEFA competition leaves a lot to be desired (W1, D6, L10), albeit their sole win came at Old Trafford (2005)!
