Myanmar deports 392 foreigners in telecom fraud crackdown

Myanmar Immigration officials hand over the documents for the repatriation process to South African Ambassador to Thailand Mr Darkey Africa yesterday.

For bilateral relations and on humanitarian grounds, Myanmar authorities yesterday sent back 363 Chinese nationals and 23 South Africans, totalling 392, who were involved in online gambling, telecom frauds and destructive actions in Kayin State, via the Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Bridge II.

From 30 January to 26 March, a total of 8,670 foreign nationals who entered Myanmar illegally were identified and detained. Of them, 5,798 were systematically handed over to the relevant countries via Thailand in pursuance of legal procedures, and the remaining 2,872 foreign nationals are ready for repatriation and are being well cared for.

The government is also intensifying efforts to crack down on online scams and online gambling by cooperating with international countries, including neighbouring countries, especially through the Myanmar-China-Thailand Trilateral Cooperation.
