EXPERTS KENYA NACADA Sensitised Boda Boda Riders On Drug Risks 2 weeks ago Samuel Post Views: 80 The National Authority for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA) has sensitized Boda boda operators in Busia County on the negative effects of drug and substance abuse. Speaking during the sensitisation that brought together more than 300 boda boda riders across the county in Busia town on Tuesday, Busia County NACADA Coordinator Zeka Wekesa said a number of boda boda operators have been victims of alcohol and drug abuse due to their exposure. We have also cautioned them against being used to transport drugs and illicit brew,’ he said, adding that a number of the operators use drugs while at work, hence increased cases of road accidents. He encouraged the operators to embrace positive parenting in order to protect children from drug abuse. Busia Municipality Assistant County Commissioner Calvin Monare urged the riders to ensure they avoid any form of addiction that would affect their lives. “We have many cases of drug addiction in this county,” – he said, adding that the riders should also refrain from gambling because it is destroying many families. Busia County Deputy chairperson of boda boda riders, Charles Barasa, urged the operators to ensure they adhere to NACADA officials advise in order to curb the vice. “I want to ask my members in the sector that we follow what NACADA has advised us today. Let us stop the use of alcohol and drugs for the sake of our health and even for the sake of all road users, as it will help to reduce many accidents,” – he said. Teso South Sub County boda boda riders’ secretary, William Wanyama, acknowledged that the sector has been affected by the drug abuse menace, leading to an increased number of accidents. “We have been informed about the effects of alcohol and drug abuse and as the boda boda sector, we are going to implement what we have been told to induce sobriety in the sector,” – he said.
