Norway – Serbia | 08/10/2020

Thursday evening sees Norway take on Serbia in Path C’s playoff semi-final as both sides aspire to earn qualification for next summer’s European Championships. The two countries will be vying for a spot in next month’s playoff final against either Scotland or Israel, with the overall winner entering Group D in the tournament.

Norway are historically weak against Serbia (W3, D2, L10), and have failed to qualify on the two previous occasions they’ve been at this stage of EURO qualification. Regardless, Norway have lost just one of their last 11 matches in all competitions (W5, D5, L1), scoring 2+ goals in seven of those.

The Norwegians’ last 11 matches have averaged 3.27 total goals, and both teams have scored in six of their last seven. Furthermore, none of their last 40 matches have been goalless. Only the latter outcome seems likely though, given that sides scoring first have won 14 out of 18 all-time EURO play-off ties, and there has never been a goalless tie.

Serbia, meanwhile, are winless in three entering this match (D2, L1), but have (like Norway) played just two matches in 2020. They too have seen plenty of goals lately, seeing an average of 3.6 across their last ten games in all competitions (W5, D2, L3) with seven of those featuring both teams scoring.

Conceding has been an issue, and they’ve kept a clean sheet in just two of their last 14 matches, letting in 2+ in three of their last four. For or against, a strong majority of the goals (77.78%) across their last seven matches have come in the second half.
