RB Leipzig – Paris SG | 04/11/2020

RB Leipzig entertain Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in Group H of the Champions League, with both sides desperate to win after being defeated by Manchester United. The two sides met as recently as August in the semi final of this competition, with PSG comfortably winning 3-0.

Consecutive defeats ‘to nil’ will worry RB Leipzig going into this UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash, especially considering one of those was a club-record 5-0 defeat in their last UCL fixture. However at home, they’ve won all four of their competitive matches this season, netting before HT in each.

Although Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann has his PSG counterpart to thank for his first non-playing role in football, this will still be a grudge match after PSG knocked Leipzig out of the UCL semi-finals last season with a 3-0 HT/FT double. After that result, the Germans have conceded an average of 2.0 goals across their previous seven encounters versus French opposition (W2, D2, L3), compared to the average of just 0.67 that they’ve netted in their last three such games held in Leipzig (W1, D1, L1).

PSG’s 3-0 win at Nantes on Saturday has them top of the Ligue 1 (L1) table (W7, L2), as they attempt to become only the third team in French top-flight history (RC Paris in 1935/36; Nice in 1950/51) to win the title after losing their opening two matches. That victory also brought coach Thomas Tuchel’s win-rate in L1 away games up to 70% – the best such rate of any manager in the club’s history.

It’ll come as no surprise then that PSG have won their last five competitive away games ‘to nil’, each by at least a -1 handicap. They have, however, conceded the opener in two of their previous three UCL games held in an opponent’s country (W1, D1, L1), after scoring all five of their goals during that period after the 60th minute.
