RB Leipzig – Union Berlin | 20/01/2021

RB Leipzig host Union Berlin in the Bundesliga on Wednesday, with the visitors guaranteed to move into the top four of the table at the halfway stage of the season if they can beat Julian Nagelsmann’s side. Leipzig, meanwhile, must win themselves in order to avoid losing any more ground on league leaders Bayern Munich.

Second-placed RB Leipzig lost further ground on Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich with their 2-2 draw at Wolfsburg (Jan 16) and they’ve now won just one of their last four league games (D2, L1). It was also their first Bundesliga match in four to produce over 0.5 first-half goals, also a feature of each of their last five H2Hs with Union Berlin.

Hard to break down, they’ve conceded just one first-half goal at home in the Bundesliga this term and have scored a league-high nine goals without reply between the 16th minute and HT. This early dominance means Leipzig are yet to trail a home league game at the break this season (HT: W5, D3).

Fifth-placed Union lie just four points behind their hosts following a 1-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen (Jan 15) which stretched their unbeaten Bundesliga run to six matches (W3, D3). Reliable goal-getters, they’ve found the net in every top-flight match this season and scored 16 (50%) of their 32 Bundesliga goals before the 16th minute or after the 75th.

Impressively, they’re the division’s only team yet to concede before the 30th minute on the road, and they’ve scored 2+ goals in four of their last five Bundesliga away matches (W3, D1, L1). However, those records could be under threat as their previous three visits to Leipzig each witnessed them concede exactly three times, and featured goal action before the 15th minute (L3).
