Real Madrid – RB Leipzig | 14/09/2022 CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Real Madrid will be bidding to make it eight straight wins in all competitions at the start of the season when they continue their Champions League campaign against RB Leipzig on Wednesday night. Los Blancos, who are the holders of the European Cup, opened their Group F season with a 3-0 victory at Celtic last week, while Leipzig started with a surprise 4-1 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

Despite going a goal down to Mallorca, Real Madrid hit back to win 4-1 on Sunday, their second straight victory by a three-goal margin after opening their UEFA Champions League (UCL) campaign by impressively dispatching Celtic 3-0. Madrid are becoming used to battling adversity, recording seven straight wins this term despite losing Karim Benzema and Éder Militão to injury and selling Casemiro to Manchester United.

Federico Valverde scored a wonder strike against Mallorca, dribbling from his own half and finishing with his weaker foot to highlight the plethora of world-class options manager Carlo Ancelotti has at his disposal. With Lucas Vázquez the latest to be on the treatment table, the four-time UCL winning boss will need those options as Los Blancos aim to make it seven consecutive home games against German opposition without defeat (W4, D2).

After Domenico Tedesco was dismissed following RB Leipzig’s 4-1 UCL matchday one defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk, new boss Marco Rose guided them to a 3-0 Bundesliga win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday which should boost them ahead of this trip to the Bernabéu. Rose knows all too well how steep a challenge awaits as he won neither of his previous meetings with Madrid when in charge of Borussia Mönchengladbach (D1, L1).

This is Leipzig’s first UCL trip to Spain but if recent form is any guide, it could be entertaining as they haven’t drawn any of their previous eight UCL away fixtures (W3, L5), the last three of which produced an incredible average of 6.33 goals per game! Leipzig do have good memories of Spain though, having beaten Real Sociedad 3-1 in the away leg of last season’s UEFA Europa League round of 32.
