EXPERTS SEYCHELLES Seychelles Drops Quarantine Requirement-To Kick start the Tourism Sector 8 months ago Adeleye Awakan Post Views: 640 Seychelles has reopened its borders and dropped quarantine requirements to all travelers who’ve been vaccinated against Covid-19. Fully vaccinated visitors are now permitted to enter the 115-island nation without having to quarantine for ten days, provided they present a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours of travel. Travelers must also submit an authentic certificate from their national health authority as evidence they’ve received both doses of the vaccine. In comparison, non-vaccinated visitors from Seychelles category 1 and 2 lists and those arriving private jet are permitted to enter as long as they self-isolate for ten days and provide a negative PCR result taken within 72 hours of arrival. Seychelles located 1,600 kilometers from the coast of Tanzania; the country depends on tourism for around 65% of its GDP. Officials are hopeful the new measures will prove to be a step in the right direction for reviving the island nation’s hailing tourism. “We hope that this will open up the tourism industry for the locals, primarily for the small hotels who are struggling. La Digue, Praslin, and also Mahe and provided the kick that our economy desperately needs,” Tourism Minister Sylvester Redegonde said during a press conference earlier this month. This new development is a fascinating report for a business in the tourism industry—land-based casinos work-hand-in-hand with tourism in several parts of the country. The casinos are attached to hotels and resorts, as mentioned by the minister, and they rely on tourists’ customers even though the land-based casino business reopened on June 1, 2020. Unfortunately, the industry is struggling, with tourists being limited due to the second wave of virus spike in Europe. The country’s statistics show Europeans’ high interest in the island nation over the years; approximately 80% of tourists are Europeans. In 2012 about 908,000 international tourist arrivals were recorded. The figure has steadily been increasing from foreign tourists since establishing the country’s international airport in 1971. The average length of stay per visitor has consistently been recorded at around ten nights for each visitor. In contrast, Seychelles is a middle-income country with a GDP per capita of $14,220 in 2013; since the global financial crisis. The country’s economy is service-based; the services sector is the main contributor to its GDP. The tourism and the casino sector plays an integral part in its economy; according to the World Bank tourism industry is the second biggest industry in Seychelles after commercial fishing. The initiative represents one of the economy’s key markets thanks to its unique biodiversity, cultural richness, and comprehensive maritime environment. It is not surprising that casinos are attached to the resort, hotels, and bars, which served as an entertainment center for locals and tourists. However, it is interesting to know that tourism space contributes immeasurable to the casino business in Seychelles. In contrast, the Seychelles gaming industry generates revenue of SR159.7 million as gross income in 2017, according to the Seychelles Financial Service Authority (FSA). The Financial Services Authority Seychelles is mandated to issue a Casino license and supervise the islands’ casinos’ operation, Slot machines, and Interactive gaming. There are currently seven slot machine outlets and five licensed casinos in Seychelles, two situated on the largest islands, Mahé and Baie Lazare, the largest gambling city.
