Spain – Switzerland | 10/10/2020

Spain will be looking to make it back-to-back wins in the 2020-21 UEFA Nations League when they continue their League A Group 4 campaign at home to Switzerland on Saturday night. Luis Enrique’s side are currently top of the section with four points to show from their two previous games, while Switzerland sit bottom with just one point from their two fixtures thus far.

Despite dominating possession, Spain only managed a goalless draw against Portugal last time out. However, that draw did extend their current unbeaten run to 14 games (W10, D4). Interestingly, they led at both HT/FT and scored in both halves of eight victories, though each game vs opposition currently ranked in FIFA’s top-20 was goalless at HT.

Usually disciplined on home soil, Spain haven’t conceded a goal across the last 475 minutes of play, winning their last five such games to nil and by a 2+ goal margin. Topically, Spain have scored 2+ goals in six of their seven home games played vs top-20 ranked nations since EURO 2016 (W4, D2, L1).

Switzerland are now winless in their last six games vs top-20 ranked nations (D3, L3) since their 5-2 victory over Belgium in the last edition of the UEFA Nations League (UNL). Notably, four of those six games saw both teams score, whilst only one was settled by a 2+ goal margin.

Interestingly, all of Switzerland’s UNL away games, including their semi-final appearance, saw both teams score with over 2.5 total goals (W1, L3), three of which ended 2-1. Despite the back-and-forth nature of those games, the side scoring first went on to win all, just as in seven of their eight competitive away games since the 2018 World Cup.
