Sun welcomes South Africa tourist release

Casino operator Sun International in South Africa has welcomed the UK government’s decision to drop its ban on tourists travelling to the country.

South Africa had been on the red list in the UK’s traffic light system to govern international travel. With the removal of the restriction on South Africa, Sun’s COO hospitality, Graham Wood, had gone on record as welcoming the move as a much-needed boost for the hospitality, gaming and integrated resorts sectors.

South African trade magazine Gaming for Africa, quotes Wood: “We are ecstatic that South Africa has been taken off the United Kingdom’s red list. The UK is a key source market into South Africa and this decision means that UK travellers still have time to book their year-end trips to South Africa.

“The busy travel season of November through to March, particularly out of the UK and Europe, will be buoyed by this announcement. So this is a real boost for our travel and tourism industry that, as we know, has been decimated by the effects of the global pandemic over the last 18 to 24 months. With domestic travel also picking up, our hotels are looking forward to a good end of year season.

“The UK contributed 5.79 per cent of our total room revenue and 14.26 per cent of international room revenue in 2019. The UK is our number one international source market.”
