The BiG Africa Summit 2024: Day Two Recap

The second day of the 10th annual BiG Africa Summit was brimming with activity and insights, plunging into the most critical issues shaping the continent’s burgeoning iGaming landscape.

C-level executives, industry leaders, and regulatory heavyweights came together at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg, South Africa, to engage in thought-provoking discussions, strategize future growth opportunities, and celebrate the industry’s pioneers.

The overarching theme of the day was responsible gambling and the importance of player protection, and the morning kicked off with a highly anticipated keynote address by Nkoatse Mashamaite (National Gambling Board of South Africa). His address, titled “A Sleeping Giant: Insights on a Future Gambling Framework in South Africa,” offered valuable insights and potential timelines for the long-awaited Remote Gambling Bill.

This was followed by a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by Martin Sack (Brainstorm Online), that dissected the current status of the bill’s progress, featuring Wayne Lurie (Lurie Inc. Attorneys) alongside Nkoatse Mashamaite, touching on what happens when you “start to call a spade a spade” in terms of legislation such as the Remote Gambling Bill.

The conversation shifted to the ever-important topic of Responsible Gaming. A phenomenal panel discussion, moderated by Steve Hall (Jarvie Worldwide), brought together industry veterans Felix Mukaxe (Mozambique Gambling Board), Robin Bennett (Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board), and Solomon Godwin (Booming Games) to assess current industry efforts and strategise responsible gaming initiatives for the future.

The day culminated with a standout presentation by Lorien Gamaroff (Centbee), who explored the relevance of blockchain technology for iGaming, delving into its potential for audits, proof of fairness, and secure payments. Lorien Gamaroff gave a phenomenal insight into the competitive edge presented to us in the industry by blockchain – a system which he says is the most important innovation in the industry since the internet.

The final panel discussion of the day, moderated by Sasha Boerma (Coastline Gaming), saw industry leaders like Christian Rajter (Split The Pot) and Tumelo Mokoena (South African Responsible Gambling Foundation) brainstorm innovative approaches to player engagement through creative betting offers. The day concluded with inspiring closing remarks by our chairperson, Lois Bright (Initiate International).

Day Two of the BiG Africa Summit proved to be a resounding success, solidifying its position as the premier platform for thought leadership, collaboration, and driving the future of African iGaming.

We concluded with the highly anticipated BiG Awards Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony – a truly unforgettable culmination of this landmark event, where leaders and innovators in the industry received recognition for their hard work and achievements.
