The new sport soon developed following, the first local league being formed in the year 1933. Harnessed and developed into a critical part of the country, the love for football was born during the country’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1957. The roots of modern football in Ghana go back to the sixties when the Black Stars, the senior national football team was formed. The 1970s and 1980s: The Golden Generation: Ghanaian football was at its best during the 1970s and the 1980s. The Black Stars played in the AFCON finals every year and placed second in 1968 and 1970. Mexico 1970 was especially notable, with Brazilian team advancing to a second round and thus, letting football fans taste their potential skill. The 1980s were even more productive, Ghana clinched the AFCON title for three times, the years being 1978, 1982 and 1984. Following the 2006 AFCON in Egypt where the Black Stars made it to the quarter final, and a disappointing lose in the final match to Ivory Coast the black stars eventually qualified for the world cup in 2006.
