The ins and outs of the PSL’s new Betway deal

With Betway now confirmed as the new sponsors of top-Night football in South Africa, it makes the online gambling company the fourth sponsor of the league throughout the NSL era.

Domestic league football was under the sponsorship of SAB Breweries under their Bagship product Castle League from the inception of NSL in 1985 until the end of the 2006/07 season.

From there, multinational banking and financial services conglomerate ABSA took over until 2020 when DStv took over the baton on a five-year deal.

However, they abrogated four years into the deal, paving way for online gambling company Betway to take over on a three-year deal worth R900 million.

Dr. Irvin Khoza, the PSL chairman, conNrmed that he also had several meetings with Hollywoodbets.

“I had several meetings with Hollywoodbets and the sponsor that wanted to sponsor (Moroka Swallows),” – confirmed Khoza.

The power of gambling companies is evident in the EPL, where 11 clubs now have gambling companies as their front-of-short sponsors.

“We don’t chase away anybody and with Swallows, the truth was told that they didn’t comply. We do things the right way. It is our responsibility to assist the clubs… we understand why it has been important to create a grant for the teams. Any help that a club wants, we give that support,” – says Khoza.

Domestic football will start on August 3 with fixtures set to be released on Wednesday afternoon, at the time of writing.

Laurence Michel, Betway Africa CEO, pointed out their interest in football.

“This partnership is the biggest single investment in South African sport and underscores Betway’s commitment to the future of South African football,” – says Michel.

“We put our money where our mouth is and we look forward to a successful partnership.”

Matters related to the prize money are yet to be disclosed with Mamelodi Sundowns having banked R15 million each season of winning all four league titles under DStv.

Meanwhile, the PSL’s feeder league will continue with their current sponsorship deal despite Betway taking over the as the backers of the Premiership.

Khoza has conNrmed a new Nve-year deal for the league.

“A lot of kids now want to play in the Diski Challenge because we have turned it into a lifestyle thing. It is a five-year (deal) that is starting this season with the Diski and that is guaranteed,” – says Khoza.
