Tottenham – Everton | 13/09/2020

Tottenham Hotspur get their 2020-21 Premier League campaign underway on Sunday afternoon when they host Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jose Mourinho will welcome his good friend and fellow managerial legend Carlo Ancelotti to North London with both clubs hoping for better campaigns than last season.

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to start their season with a bang and continue their decent record of just one defeat from their previous seven Premier League (PL) opening day fixtures (W5, D1, L1). Notably, they netted their last five goals in these games during either the first or final 20 minutes of the match, and scored 2+ in each of their previous three PL openers.

‘Spurs’ lost just four home league games last season (W12, D3, L4) and have lost just three of their 28 PL home H2Hs against Everton (W17, D8, L3). Yet whilst they’ve scored inside the opening 30 minutes in five of the previous six meetings, it’s worth noting that Tottenham dropped 19 points from winning positions last term, a trend that has increased across the last three PL campaigns (14 in 2018/19; 4 in 2017/18).

Everton haven’t lost any PL opener across their previous eight seasons (W2, D6), with four of those six draws ending via a 2-2 scoreline. Their recent PL away form hasn’t been great though, and they lost four of their final six away matches last term (W2), and also failed to score over 1.5 goals in each of the last five.

In fact, the ‘Toffees’ rarely took the initiative in their PL road trips last term, securing a HT lead in just 21.05% of such matches. Furthermore, they also had a tendency to succumb to late goals, ending the season with an away goal difference of -5 after the 75th minute.
