ONLINE WORLD NEWS Traveling through the iGaming markets of Scandinavia and the Baltic with Slotegrator 3 years ago Szarlot Post Views: 325 A dedicated and affluent player base, a strong focus on responsible gaming, many regulated markets and a handful of state monopolies. In a new article, Slotegrator reviews online gambling in the northern edges of the old continent. Scandinavia and the Baltic are home to many interesting iGaming markets at once. While some of these markets are subject to state monopolies, the region remains attractive for prospective investors. Among its key features are high rates of internet penetration, notable levels of disposable income, and the locals’ well-known love for gambling as a form of entertainment. Basically, the online gambling market in Scandinavia and the Baltic is regulated, but each region has specific features that must be taken into account when a business expands. For example, in Denmark, operators can acquire local licenses to provide both casino and betting services, but lotterie are subject to a state monopoly and run by Danske Lotteri Spil. A similar situation takes place in Latvia: the market is open to licensed private operators, except for lotteries, which are run by Latvijas Loto. Online gambling in Norway has been subject to two state monopolies since the 1990s, as is the Finnish market, regulated by the Lotteries Act of 200, but monopolised. The Icelandic market is not the most pleasant story: most forms of gambling are formally illegal, the only exception concerns lotteries. However, there are countries that are open to running an iGaming business. So the Gambling Act and Gambling Ordinance in Sweden from 2019 has given operators the opportunity to acquire casino gaming and betting licenses. Unlike most other jurisdictions, Sweden allows bookmakers to take bets on any type of event, including virtual and non- sport related ones. Lithuanian market is regulated by the 2001 Gaming Law and supervised by the Gaming Control Authority. Operators can offer all classic casino games and betting services; an amendment was submitted in 2020, adding virtual events to the list of viable betting products.
