Union Berlin – Mainz | 02/10/2020

Two sides still without a win in the new Bundesliga season will lock horns on Friday evening as Union Berlin welcome Mainz 05 to the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. The hosts played out a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach in gameweek two, while Mainz fell to defeat to newly-promoted Stuttgart last Saturday.

Union Berlin are still searching for their first win of the new Bundesliga campaign (D1, L1), and have a good shot at grabbing it here as they face struggling Mainz (L2). However their first two league games this season saw them concede the opener within the 15 minutes either side of HT, although they did score in or after the 75th minute in both games too.

Netting first could help the hosts get those first three points, especially as they won eight of the 11 Bundesliga home games last season in which they opened the scoring (W8, D2, L1). However, like their opening home match this term, Union failed to win when conceding first here last top-flight campaign (D1, L5), albeit the one draw came in the previous H2H.

After a 4-1 drubbing last time out, Mainz coach Armin Beierlorzer has been sacked despite the fact he secured their Bundesliga status with three wins from their final five games last season (L2). However, they have conceded in all four halves of Bundesliga football played this season.

Last term the visitors picked up more points away than at home (20 vs 17), and their away defeat on opening day remains just their second loss in six Bundesliga road trips (W2, D2, L2). Impressively, Mainz scored first in ten of their 17 away league games last season, going on to win six (W6, D1, L3).
