Uruguay will be looking to move above Paraguay in the World Cup qualifying table with a win on Thursday. Paraguay are yet to lose any of their opening four qualifiers but of those games, only Argentina would be considered difficult. Uruguay have won their last two meetings with Thursday’s guests and with Luis Suarez in form they are the favourites to secure another 3pts.

This is a big FIFA World Cup qualifying encounter between two sides both locked on six points after their opening four matches. Uruguay will be hoping they can make it to their fourth consecutive finals, but they’ll be disappointed with their record so far (W2, L2), particularly in the context of them scoring 2+ goals in three of those four matches.

Ahead of this round, only Brazil and Ecuador have beaten Uruguay’s tally of seven qualifying goals. Four of those goals arrived after the 70th minute, indicating that Óscar Tabárez’s men tend to grow in threat the longer the game progresses. Even so, they’ve scored the opening goal before HT in two of their previous three home fixtures, ultimately winning both applicable games.

With Paraguay missing out on the last two editions of the FIFA World Cup finals, they will be eager to build on an unbeaten start to this qualification campaign (W1, D3). ‘La Albirroja’ opened the scoring in each of the last three matches in that sequence, twice doing so before HT, yet they failed to hold onto the lead at the break on both occasions (HT: D1, L1).

With no defeat in seven games for Eduardo Berizzo’s men (W2, D5), the visitors should feel confident. However, they do travel to Montevideo knowing they’re without a win in seven encounters against their hosts (D3, L4), having failed to score more than once in all of those matches.
