LOTTERIES SOUTH AFRICA Why playing international lotteries could be illegal 2 weeks ago Samuel Post Views: 183 If you’re someone who plays the national Lotto often, it might be tempting for you to participate in international lottery draws that are advertised online. Ithuba are the operators of the national lottery in South Africa and they are the only legal way to participate in jackpot draws. Here’s what you should know about why international lotteries can be illegal for South Africans. ITHUBA NATIONAL LOTTERY SAYS… According to the National Gambling Act, a gaming or gambling provider must have the correct registration details to offer a legal lottery. Ithuba National Lottery is registered to provide lottery games and payouts to South Africans as long as their conditions are met. Players must be over 18, and must be legally allowed to sign a contract in order to play any of the LOTTO draws. SPECIFICALLY WHY INTERNATIONAL LOTTERIES DON’T COUNT A South African citizen may participate in LOTTO draws because of laws that permit gambling operators (such as LOTTO or Emperor’s Palace) to be registered. The same laws only allow South Africans of legal age to gamble with operators registered under South African law. For example, while a lottery game in Sweden could be legal for winners there, South African citizens would have broken the law by gambling with an overseas operator that lacks registration here. Even if you managed to buy a ticket with the right numbers, you wouldn’t be able to legally claim the money – and if you somehow did, the money would be illegal and seized as part of the law. HOW DO I KNOW I’M PLAYING THE REAL LOTTO? Authentic, Ithuba National Lottery games can be played through the official LOTTO app, via banking apps, or at official ticket retailers. Games can also be played by creating an account on the official Ithuba website at this link. Remember that only authorised retailers may sell legal National Lottery games and tickets!
